In observance of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Local surgeon offers free Sentinel Node Biopsy seminar

Morganton - Being diagnosed with breast cancer can be frightening. Often times women (and men) fear not only loosing a breast but also their life. The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation reports that approximately 215,990 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2004. In observance of National Breast Cancer Awareness month, Dr. William G. Cloud of Cloud Surgical Solutions will be hosting a free seminar to discuss Sentinel Node Biopsy, a new procedure used in the evaluation of breast cancer.

Sentinel node biopsy has become a popular method of "mapping" breast cancer because it is less invasive and carries a lower risk of complications. The surgeon can detect if cancer has spread to other areas by removing only one to three lymph nodes instead of 10 to 30. By identifying the first lymph nodes that an area of the breast drains to (the sentinel lymph node), the procedure can identify the probable nodes that cancer would spread to and therefore the appropriate nodes to biopsy to determine the spread of cancer.

Dr. Cloud is a board-certified surgeon who has significant experience in cancer and abdominal surgery, and particularly advanced laparoscopic surgery. Most recently Dr. Cloud received a three-year appointment as cancer liaison physician for the Cancer Care Program at Grace Hospital. The Cancer Physician Program is an integral part of the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons. In this role, Dr. Cloud is among a national network of more than 1,600 volunteer cancer liaison physicians who provide leadership and support of the CoC Approvals Program.

The free Sentinel Node Biopsy seminar will be held Thursday, October 21 at 6pm in the lobby of Cloud Surgical Solutions located in Grace Medical Park at 117 Foothills Drive, Building D in Morganton. Due to limited seating reservations by Monday, October 18 are recommended. Please contact Chasity at (828) 437-0847 for more information or to reserve your seat.
